Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Doug C — 29 Nov 2009
â??Sitting here thinkingâ??s pretty rough when youâ??ve spent most of your life not thinking.â?? Another great noir directed by Fritz Lang. This one stars Glenn Ford as a crusading homicide detective bent on exposing corruption in the city, but the price to human life is high.
His wife dies in a car explosion meant for him, which turns his quest for justice to the pursuit of revenge, and several other characters end up dead as a consequence of his investigation of the crime boss behind it all.
Gloria Grahame plays a great role as the crime bossâ??s wife who seeks redemption, and in a classic noir ending, the film does a beautiful job of combining a measure of redemption with a certain atmosphere of nihilism.
