Review of The Big Country (1958) by Cli O — 30 Nov 2008
Deservedly recognized as one of the best classic Western films of all time. Gregory Peck's character is superbly original as a newcomer to the West who brings with him a sense of personal honour and comportment that run counter to the prevailing attitudes of the hard hearted locals.
Peck is tested repeatedly as his lack of open aggression brings his manhood into question, even by his fiance whom he has moved to the area to be with. Too late do they realize that a giant now walks among them whose indomitable will is beyond their ken.
Top notch cinematography, musical score and impressive stunt work cap off this enthralling film.
