An excessively successful reporter George Stroud (Ray Milland) finds himself married more to his job than his wife - who are trying for perhaps the final time to get away on their long overdue honeymoon.

Part of the reason is George's tyrant of a boss Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton) who needs George to continue finding suspects before the police for his publications. Janoth is always particular about time which certainly plays a significant role in the film - as indicated by the title which refers to a large clock within Janoth's building.

A murder is committed and soon Stroud finds all clues leading to himself despite his innocence. A very good Hollywood noir from its finest period - the 1940s. Milland is good in the lead, but certainly pales in comparison to the scenery chewing of Charles Laughton, sporting an absolutely ridiculous mustache.

Elsa Lanchester is also excellent as an eccentric artist with several mouths to feed. And Henry Morgan doesn't say a word! The Big Clock is always entertaining and a fine example of Hollywood film noir.
