Review of The Big Blue (1988) by Sylvia Q — 02 Apr 2011
This is a really hard question in life - between love and occupational obsession, which one would you possibly choose if you can only pick one? Would you want to observe your obligations as a husband and father, or would you pursue what makes you truly happy and to die for?
The last movie that provoked such thoughts in me has to be the "Cinema Paradiso". The protagonist has a successful career yet he has never felt satisfied in life ever since he is forced to leave his one and only first love. Here, the free diver gives up everything, including his life, for his ultimate obsession for the deep blue sea. Is he messed up? It is really not for us to judge. He knows what is best for him.
Moral lessons aside, Luc Besson has made the ocean look absolutely mysterious and alluring. Sure it is. This film offers the best sceneries of the Mediterranean. The soundtrack should claim its credit too for making it a success.
After watching it, all material life in the CBD does not matter any more. Embracing and living in harmony with the nature seem alluring to me too...
