Review of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) by Tyler S — 19 Jun 2008
A wonderfully sentimental but stranegly modern story of three servicemen returning after wwii. it manages to cram in every post-war cliche while still dealing boldly with the problems they face; hasty marriages, the stigma of war wounds etc.
in fact the scene where homer forces his girlfriend to watch while he takes off his claw hands must have been seen as incredibly controversial. I can understand why it didn;t get a god reception; the idea that returning GIs had issues and that these weren;t being dealt with by the counry must have been pretty close to the knuckle.
