Review of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) by Tim H — 09 Oct 2014
It may be a little long, and is in no way more powerful than "It's A Wonderful Life", but this still-incredible film features a touching story of WWII veterans returning home to lives of varying difficulty. It's anchored by some very fine performances by Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Myrna Loy, and real-life veteran Harold Russell (one of only two non-actors to win an Oscar). The material manages to reveal hardships that returning war heroes face in the aftermath of war, with the relationships between men and family members feeling grounded in reality.
A fine film that lasts in the decades after release.
