Review of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) by Jim C — 16 Jan 2012
The quintessential "home from war" drama. It has been criticized for its casting of an actual wartime veteran, Harold Russell, whose amateur performance is at times glaring, but his disability (he lost his hands) helps bring the soldiers' experience to light.
The film also captures the struggles, fears and hopes of America immediately after its greatest war, some of which we today are just beginning to wrestle with in the waning days of the post-9/11 wars.
