Review of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) by Wes M — 03 Mar 2012
Wow. As my parents would say, this is "when movies were movies." It's quite easy to see why this won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Adapted Screenplay (wow, almost got the Big Five).
This also features some astounding cinematography, such as extensively long takes and some interesting choice angles. Now for the best part: Harold Russell. He won Best Supporting Actor for thisâ¦he's also not an actor! He was a real soldier in WWII, and he really did lose both of his hands in the war.
I found it funny that this new movie "Act Of Valor" just came out and lots of people are criticizing it cuz these real navy seals can't act. Well, this real soldier CAN act. The guy has some phenomenal acting chops, and he makes it look effortless.
O, and him and this guy Haing S. Ngor are the only two non-professional actors to win an Academy Award for acting. Russell additionally got an honorary Academy Award for his role cuz he brought hope and optimism to other veterans.
So, he's also the only actor to win 2 academy awards for the same role. But I'm rambling. Simply put, it's a knockout film that follows 3 soldiers after WWII, and how the war and time have affected their lives.
It was made only 1 year after the war ended, so it was, and still is, very culturally significant. See it.
