Review of The Best Offer (2013) by Dannyboy S — 10 Sep 2013
I guess it's necessary to like this film because it's so different from the usual and for that reason, there's no excuse not to find it a change of pace and therefore interesting. I admit, I wasn't quite enjoying myself; I didn't feel as if anything significant was happening story-wise; but I decided it's a movie for a mature audience that has some patience.
You wouldn't think watching movies at the cinema would be a chore with me, but this movie did have that way about it. Patience only goes so far. The story is about illness, anti-sociability and finding love that overcomes these personality traits, but ultimately it's about trickery, and if you have the patience to wait for it, the twist near the end won't disappoint.
The twist is big and it should hook you. Maybe it comes too late, but it still enhances the entire movie, gives it more meaning, turns the romance on its head. Otherwise, I guess you have to be interested in Geoffrey Rush (he's in every scene).
What happens to his character in the end, well, it's up to you to figure out whether it's sad or justified. If you want a hint of what happens, I will say Virgil is utterly deceived by Claire, his first-ever girlfriend.
