Review of The Bedford Incident (1965) by Nate W — 16 Aug 2011
"The Bedford Incident" takes a while to fully get into, but after a mostly uneventful first act it evolves into a rewarding Cold War meditation. Richard Widmark (who also produced the picture) is superb as the Captain of a U.
S. ship stalking a Russian submarine, the tension of his precarious situation written on his strained face and hard-boiled line delivery. He seems to be channeling Ed Harris before Ed Harris was making movies.
Besides exploring the pretensions and prejudices of the Cold War, the film also touches on racism in mid-century America through the acrimonious exchanges between Widmark and costar Sidney Poitier, who were good friends in real life.
