Review of The Beaver (2011) by Joshua P — 21 Nov 2013
Not a big fan of dramadies, they usually don't do a good job mixing the two genres and it is always had to laugh while trying to be serious the next minute. This film doesn't help with that either, as I have the same issues.
However, I feel like Gibson really sold the crazy character he was supposed to be trying to cope with his depression by having a puppet act out his life for him. His son hates him and tries his best to not be like his father.
His son ends up trying to write the speech for Jennifer Lawrence Didn't really care for that story as it never really worked for me. Gibson as the CEO of a toy company in the dumps is interesting because the beaver brought new ideas which revitalized the company and that was intriguing.
As was his personal life with his family. The film is pretty short which is good. I felt it hit the notes it meant to hit, but sometimes the comedy bits took away from the message at hand.
