Review of The Beaver (2011) by Erno K — 14 Sep 2011
I have to say this about Jodie Foster, she chooses interesting scripts to direct. How about a movie about a man who talks through a beaver puppet. And can only function by doing this. Fun times.
This film is about depression. It is also about fear of becoming everything that is worst about your parents. This review is about how many times I can write the word "about". I think I'm winning (not unlike Charlie Sheen).
First of all, the puppet is pretty funny. I have no idea why he speaks with an British accent, but it's a good choice. There should have been more close-ups though, as it was hilarious every time we only see The Beaver's face when Walter talks, as if he really was a real character.
That said, the movie lacks something. The life lessons all come together too easy and too soon. There is only a short time when things are bad, most of the time Walter is just a super guy with a beaver puppet. The Jim Carrey-esque fight with the hand puppet is pretty priceless though.
All in all, a decent drama, but in real life things don't fall into place this neatly.
