Review of The Beaver (2011) by Will G — 28 Dec 2011
Let's get passed the "elephant-in-the-roomesque" factor of Mel Gibson's real life troubles and it's relevance to this movie. His performance in this movie is a testament to professional talent. I'm sure his publicized life problems had a factor in his casting but that shouldn't take away that he made this film sing.
The movie paces itself nicely through a story about a man battling depression through an extreme method. The B story involving his son's life was necessary but was not interesting to me in the slightest. However, the catharsis it provided at the end is worth it.
I think Jodie Foster did an amazing job, on and behind the camera. Which is saying a lot seeing as how I'm not a fan of hers. I applaud her for tackling the subject of a disease with such heart and efficiency.
A WARNING: it's not a light hearted movie. It's quite dark and uncomfortable at times. But it is a thoroughly heart warming an inspiring film.
