Review of The Beaver (2011) by David S — 03 Jul 2012
This is a very unusual film. It seems to start off as a comedy but gradually turns very disturbing as it becomes clear that it's really about a man having a complete breakdown in front of you. This could be one of the reasons why the film didn't do that well in the cinemas.
It's just too difficult to categorize. However I love the fact that the audience if forced to change their perspective throughout and if it all starts to become a difficult watch by the end (a scene with a rotating blade stands out!) then Foster should be applauded for attempting something different.
However the one thing that makes the film so successful is Gibson. This is an amazing performance by him and he totatly convinces in the role. He is also a great puppeter, making the beaver a real character when it could have looked very fake.
It could be his best performance ever. It's totatly worth watching it for him.
