Review of The Beaver (2011) by Francisco R — 19 Jan 2013
Gibson stars as Walter in a drama, bordering on black comedy, about a suicidal husband and father suffering from depression. The filmâ(TM)s strength is its depiction of how the three main characters (Walter, his wife, and his oldest son) cope with Walterâ(TM)s illness.
What provides a twist is that Walter's own means of coping is to don a furry handheld beaver puppet. The film contains important messages about mental illness and the struggles those inflicted have with everyday life; however, it's hard to take the story seriously when it's being told from the perspective of a hand puppet⦠but, that's the point isnâ(TM)t it.
Foster not only plays Walterâ(TM)s wife, but also directed the film. The overall acting is superb with Yelchin and Lawrence adding solid supporting performances.
