Review of The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961) by Jose M — 19 Mar 2012
Beast of Yucca Flats is a very wonderful looking picture with superb cinematography and location, but there are two faults with the film that struck this beast dead, dialogue and action. The film has a very strong narrative that is similar to reading a book, but that advantage becomes boring as the film continues with no real audible dialogue.
I never thought I would yearn for any scenes featuring someone talking even if it was badly or offensively dubbed. At one point, I wanted to yell shut up at the narrator. The action in the film is also very weak and implausible.
One scene involves a Russian scientist chased by assassins. Sure, the proper response is to drive faster, but soon the driver stops his car and the Russian walks out the car and tries to escape by walking which might be an unintentional fat/obese joke.
The film may have started pretty well, but melts away into wasted. Beast of Yucca Flats is best avoided as one would to nuclear waste. It is rumored that Sleezboy is to pick up the film and write an unofficial sequel/story known as Yeast of Bucca Flats.
