Review of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) by Peter H — 25 Jun 2010
One of the classic monster movies whose DNA can be found in nearly every monster flick from Gojira (aka Godzilla) to Cloverfield. While the film's human protagonists take up the majority of the screen time, Ray Harryhausen's special effects are the true star.
Like King Kong before it, this creature lives and breathes and carries a weight about it that falls somewhere between reality and fantasy. It's the movies! The end might leave you feeling a little cold, but that's because the effects outshine the rest of the film so much that you almost end up pining for the monster to survive!
