Review of The Beach (2000) by Skyler I — 25 Aug 2011
I really think that this is one of the most underrated movies of all time. Now I have never read the novel that this film is based on so I have basis of comparison, but what I saw was a smart, engaging film filled with fine performances and good writing, and a powerful bit of social commentary.
Danny Boyle's direction is very good and his vision for this project is just as fantastic. Leonardo DiCaprio put forward a great performance, as did Tilda Swinton, Robert Carlyle and every other member of the supporting cast.
The cinematography was excellent. I also enjoyed Richard's Soliloquies about things such as travel and love. These really clicked with me because they echo my exact feelings on the same two subjects "when you're in the depths of infatuation, you'll find any reason to think that that person is just right for you", etc.
I really don't see any reason to dislike this film.
