18 years later, we can say the beach describes pop culture on the edge of non-consuming, illusionist generation x with permanent escapism to self-centered, digital millenials. The last scene with the group pic per mail shows that time goes on with hope.
Danny Boyle himself was part of this transformation process saying he disliked all characters since the middle of the film.
