Review of The Basketball Diaries (1995) by Pat O — 30 Aug 2008
A real powerful picture about a high school basketball player's descent into junkie life. Leo DiCaprio should've got an Oscar nomination for playing Jim Caroll, such a one-man army who never seems over-the-top.
He must've really watched addicts before starting production, because he convinced me. The scene with Jim and his mother crying on both sides of a locked door when Jim begs for money just crushed me.
Mark Wahlberg puts some effort into his role, too. A very good film, held back a little by an abrupt ending that felt like it came out of nowhere.
