Review of The Band Wagon (1953) by Sookie R — 14 May 2011
Allow me to put it like this: anything that features Fred Astaire dancing should to be watched. Anything that features Fred Astaire AND Cyd Charisse dancing NEEDS to be watched and you should be ashamed if you haven't yet done so.
Terrific musical with a good script (it actually has a good story which is definitely not a characteristic attributed to most musicals) and great Technicolor visuals which are beautiful to look at. The songs aren't always the best (am not a big fan of 'That's Entertainment' though it has become a sort of anthem) and there isn't as much dancing as I would like but when either Astaire or Charisse or both are on screen, it becomes magical and hypnotizing and so it would be when one considers that these were two geniuses at the peak of their careers.
The dialogue is also fantastic and the movie features some of the cleverest musical set-pieces ever committed to celluloid.
