Review of The Band Wagon (1953) by Dustin G — 26 Jan 2012
There's something so false and unrealistic about these studio musicals that, no matter what else you have going on in the film, the musical numbers make everything cheesy. I liked the story of the this film and everything worked best when the singing and dancing was a natural part of the story, rather than an aside from it.
To be honest though, I found Fred Astaire to be a pretty poor actor. He can sing alright and dance up a storm, but he wasn't that great with the drama. And as far as the songs, some worked, some didn't.
The Triplets sequence might be one of the worst and most odd things I've ever seen in a movie. It's not a complete waste of time, but it's no Singin' in the Rain either.
