Review of The Ballad of Narayama (1983) by Patrick R — 21 Feb 2009
Shakespearean. Not a false note, not a slack moment. Sumiko Sakamoto carries the movie on her back, as her character carries her family on her back. But each character is richly drawn, idiosyncratic, odd and human.
There's even a goofy subplot to balance the darkness of mob action, murder and the fulcrum of the film --- the abandonment of the elderly at the top of a mountain. After you've watched this movie, you know you've been somewhere.
