Review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) by Johann M — 02 Jan 2019
This film changes dramatically from beginning to end. Had it continued in a highly amusing but one-note comic vein, 4 stars would have sufficed. By the end, the stories became more moving and profound.
Really, the only common thread I could discern was a 19th century western setting, and even that varied considerably, particularly the last chapter. It gets darker as the stories progress, but each one is superb in pacing and having a single effect, one of the rules of short story telling.
