Review of The Bad Seed (1956) by Roger S — 23 Jan 2010
Lately, I have been getting into 'child-deomon' movies ('Orphan'[by far the best of all of them], Joshua), and now this - this movie was definitely good...Especially for the time - 1953?
Either way, Rhoda ('the bad seed) was a total mess - I loved how she was so immune to feeling emotion for the victims she chose and her way of showing 'curtsy' to everyone around her - she was complex for a little girl...Her mom also knew that she came from a bad background and related that to her daughters actions.
The one thing that really ticked me off though, and made this movie imperfect was the used idea that it was 'scientifically proven' that if you come from a family that has good parents, make good money and live in a good neighborhood that you CANNOT become a murderer or commit crimes - this was the foundation of the whole movie: Christine, Rhoda's mom figures out that her father is not really her father and that she came from a horrible crime-infested childhood - From here, Christine puts together that her daughter is bad because she DID come from a bad background; this 'theory' that bad people only come from a bad background and it's all genetic was discussed in the movie for twenty minutes - it's all rubbish and really made the story less than because of it...Basically, Christine believes now that her daughter is 'bad' because of her genetics...Load of crap-Sh!t...
Either way, a great movie; the actors and actresses were all amazing and convincing - Rhoda was an evil little girl and watching her go from telling her mom the truth about the crimes/murders she commits while screaming and describing them with a diabolical face one minute, then having her mom hug or kiss her the next second really showed how truly horrible her way of thinking was - and that was the scary part...
Gotta love a great movie: definitely watch this one if you like creepy little kids with attitude and a really good ending (you have to wait for the 'disclosure'' at the end of the movie too - it was really funny!
