Review of The Babadook (2014) by Sam S — 19 May 2015
I rented this film instantly based on the '98% rave reviews' and haven't been more set up for disappointment in years.
The film actually starts out promising, however the moment we see 'Mister Babadook' for the first time it quickly plummets downhill and all former credibility is forgotten.
It has been a while since a horror made me burst out laughing, but when the titular character first appeared on screen this film did just that; imagine Edward Scissorhands mixed with Captain Spaulding and you have the Mister Babadook character, which instantly turns this horror into a dark comedy.
The film would've been a lot more thrilling without his physical presence.
There is an underlying depression storyline which does work but ultimately gets lost somewhere amongst other unanswered actions.
Any hopes I had for some sort of saving grace in the finale were crushed too, while left wondering what else I could've spent 1hr 30mins of my life on instead.
