Review of The Babadook (2014) by La L — 11 Jun 2016
One of the best horror films I've seen in years. Scary, smart, and unsettling while also delivering good drama and a powerful allegory for grief and depression. The writing, directing, and acting are all great, particularly from Essie Davis in the lead.
Relies on mounting dread/tension, good acting, and building atmosphere for scares instead of cheap effects and jump scares; wish more horror films were like this. Destined to become a classic.
