Review of The Babadook (2014) by J. Scott F — 12 Jun 2015
It's rare to see good critical reviews of a "horror" film - so I wasn't really sure what to expect. However, it did indeed live up to the hype. Quite possibly the best "scary movie" I've ever seen.
The first fifteen minutes or so I wondered why this film had been given such praise because it started off fairly boring . . . but that is all part of the overall theme of the film. The commonplace becomes horrific, mere annoyance becomes a life & death struggle, and childhood fantasy becomes a living nightmare.
I enjoyed the psychological aspects more than the actual "horror" of the film, and would have enjoyed it even more if we were left wondering if what we just saw actually happened at all. Real monsters are never as scary as the ones that we allow to live in our heads and hearts.
