Review of The Babadook (2014) by Azoth S — 19 Oct 2015
I heard about this the way a lot of people did, by hearing about from someone who watched it on Netflix, and it lives up to the hype. The Babadook is creepy, but what really steals the show, is the acting. Essie Davis knocks it out of the park, and Noah Wiseman is one creepy/terrifying little kid. His shrill screams literally made my hair stand at one point.
Although the title is The Babadook, we only see Babadook maybe 3 times in the movie. While the Babadook is creepy (minus some cheesy CGI) the real tension and terror is watching Amelia's depression spiral into a psychosis. That spiral is really what makes the movie tense, and terrifying. Jennifer Kent does a great job of pacing and building tension throughout the whole movie. It's definitely made her a writer/director to watch.
Verdict. B+.
Superb Acting, writing and Directing power this old school, horror throwback, and it's a tension building creepfest.
