Review of The Babadook (2014) by Jade Q — 01 May 2017
I have always been a big fan of horror films and this wonderfully sinister yet heartfelt story is a prime example of how psychological horror beats blood and guts every time. Not that I don't like gruesome films, I love them but apart from the odd film making me cringe they never scare me or creep me out.
Then along comes this innocent looking story, *monster in the closet* type thing. Seen it all before ... OR SO YOU THINK ... !
It's very clever and very creepy, relying on atmosphere, suspense that never lets up and a story that you can really relate to. Is the monster real or is it just the hallucination of a desperate mum and an emotionally starved child ? The cinematography is superb, shadows in every corner of the house, creaking floorboards and noises in the dark adding to the tension.
If you do not like horror films that play with you mind, that have you imagining noises in the dark and movement in the shadows then it would be wise not to watch this movie. Or at least leave a few lights on afterwards ;-).
