Review of The Awakening (2010) by Cheyne L — 24 May 2013
Most ghost stories benefit from taking a simple approach and execution .. when it comes to 'the awakening' this is definitely the game plan .. but simple is as simple does.. there were many moments where I felt the story was about to take off, little subplots that were unfortunately never developed .
. I think with ghost stories like 'insidious' out there today, a film like the awakening just doesn't look good in comparison .. everything was in it's right place, but the ending was confusing, and not that I didn't get it, but literally didn't make sense .
. [spoiler alert] (if you can call it that) it's basically a variation on 'the sixth sense' but just not as relevant or clever an ending considering the circumstances leading to it .. it's as if the writer didn't trust his own instincts, tacking on explanations and resolutions like they were credits .
. but the awakening is well acting by the leading lady and she kept me interested until the end, but as the resolution came and went so did my focus and investments ..
