Review of The Atomic Cafe (1982) by Robert B — 19 Apr 2008
My favorite documentary of all time, and one of my favorite (albeit depressing) movies. The documentary shows archival footage from the inception of the atomic bomd through the mid fifties, and how truly ignorant we were about the implications and effects that a nuclear war might bring.
The narrative in this documentary is like a story unto itself: The good guys? Us, of course. The bad guys? Filthy reds and their anti-freedom philosophy. A war? Duck and Cover! Shake it off. Sweep up the debris.
We're America! We'll pull through. Devastating indictment of goverment propaganda, public ignorance and apathy. Amazingly enough, the snippets talking about the threat from Communism sound eerily familiar to the scare propaganda we hear today.
For a unique look at the early Cold War, see this unique film.
