Review of The Apple (1998) by Aditya K — 24 Jun 2007
A sublime debut from the daughter of acclaimed Iranian film-maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 'The Apple' charts the extremely restricted childhood of two children locked away behind a tall gate by their parents and unable to freely communicate with the outside world.
The minutae of their days becomes stratlingly affecting as the girls discover more and more about the things that may be out there just beyond their reach. The teenage director, under the watchful eye of Makhmalbaf Snr.
, positions herself at the forefront of the Iranian New Wave. Superb.
