Review of The Apple (1998) by Yrsa F — 07 Aug 2007
Cult non-commercial viewing. Directed by a 17 year old Iranian female from the remarkable Makhmalbaf family. Like many Iranian films, its outspoken about prevalent injustice towards women & social apathy.
Its based on a real life tale of two young girls that have suffered a life-times imprisonment at the hands of their slightly nutty father. Once you've got used to the handheld camera technique, the story is so humane, touching & poignant.
The scene where the girls finally climb over the wall & just want to run & play & are given ice cream by a boy in the backstreets is wonderful. Its all very sad, yet sweet.
