Review of The Apostle (1997) by Rachel S — 14 Oct 2007
Absolutely fantastic. I can't believe I've missed this one up until now. I've been a huge fan of the soundtrack, but the movie is just incredible. Complex characters that seem incredibly real.
This movie is such a believable portrait of a Christian struggling with life and sin and failure all while trying to understand God's calling. The protagonist is someone you can't help but love and sympathize with and despise at the same time... for a follower of Christ, this should be required viewing.
It is not that the plot is so complex; it's not. The characters drive this film and they do it very well.
This film is surprising and predictable at the same time. Why? Because it's the story of every follower to some degree. It's the story of struggling. Of passion. Of hurt. Of faith. Of faithfulness. A story of failure and of redemption. A story, in short, about life.
