Review of The Apostle (1997) by Jeff S — 07 May 2011
So so story about a preacher going nuts on his ex-wife's new lover, and then fleeing the scene and going incognito somewhere else. While he's there, God's work comes a-calling again, and soon he's building a new church and following.
It seems that this film is less about plot and more about Robert Duvall convincing us he's a priest in the deep south. Hardly a second is wasted on other characters (for example, Billy-Bob Thornton is completely, utterly misused here as a white rascist in one scene and, literally, the next, is being saved).
Plenty of scenery chewing to be had here. Not much of a movie I'm afraid.
