Review of The Apostle (1997) by Alex H — 28 Jan 2009
An interesting film well worth watching at least once. The main character (Duvall) provides an accurate glimpse into Charismatic Pentecostalism, while he struggled with temptation, weakness, sin and its consequences.
Ultimately, Duvall took matters into his own hands and fled so that he might start over, which he did quite successfully to some degree. On the down side, in spite of all the 'good' he did, Duvall's character never seemed to take accountability for what he did, and he never explicitly repented either (even though he told some people what he had done).
The only thing he seemed willing to do was to keep pressing forward, even when justice finally caught up with him. In this regard, it may accurately reflect the human condition, but it does not (in my opinion) provide a good 'moral' example--- which, I believe, should have included admitting his sin, repentance and trusting in God's forgiveness .
.. not just for the sins of others, but for HIS OWN sins too.
