Review of The Apartment (1960) by Pamela D — 13 Sep 2008
A true classic! Billy Wilder's second greatest work...which is saying something. This dark comedy is the type of romance film you would not have taken a date to go see. It is so sad and Jack Lemmon's performance as C.C. "Bud" Baxter is hauntingly realistic. He is the "everyman"...with a minor exception. I absolutely loved Jack Lemmon films already, but from the moment I saw this film, I knew I had chosen a quiet lion of the silver screen as my all-time favorite actor. Fred MacMurray's character (the company executive) is ruthless, in a horribly suave way.
Oh, how this movie makes me wish I had a Fran Kubelik in my life.
