Review of The Apartment (1960) by Ian S — 17 Jul 2009
Not exactly the stone-cold classic I was expecting, this was nonetheless very well written and performed. Lemmon is always appealing, and this is my first ever exposure to Shirley MacLaine, and she's very watchable.
What baffles me is how this has a reputation as a comedy - it's a really rather straight-faced drama, with maybe two or three 'classic' moments for the golden oldie clip reels, between which are looooong swathes of very talky dialogue.
Two arse-murdering hours of it. Still, rewarding in a sweet, simple way.
