Review of The Apartment (1960) by Sookie R — 14 May 2011
Cynical and witty Wilder classic that manages to be heartbreaking and touching nevertheless. A film for grown-ups about broken adults who stumble through life always making the same mistakes and never learning from them.
There is a beautiful romance at the center of this drama between the film's protagonists, Lemmon's C.C.Baxter and MacLaine's Fran Kubelik, who learn to love one another for each's personality instead of their looks, which is a refreshing concept and seemingly an old-fashioned one seeing as this is a movie from the 1960's.
It ends with my favourite denouement of all time which is telling when one considers that Wilder was a master at concocting great finales.
