I don't think it's as great as its reputation and it certainly isn't my favorite Billy Wilder Film. Still, it's quite good with fine performances and a visual style cribbed from King Vidor's The Crowd.
It doesn't truly work because of too many shifts in tone and an ending I don't really buy.
