Review of The Apartment (1960) by Corey B — 16 Feb 2012
Just rewatched this last night and it's still fantastic. There have been very few movies that have managed to balance optimism and cynicism as successfully as The Apartment. It's ability to go from slapstick to utter despair and back again makes it completely unpredictable and gives the central romance an urgency that is lacking in most movies.
It helps that Lemmon and MacLaine are incredibly likable, and even when the movie gets super serious, they find unexpected laughs.
It also helps that it has one of the best final scenes/final lines ever.
