Review of The Apartment (1960) by Jesse B — 02 Mar 2012
This cannot be very much of a review as it is more of a personal statement (and perhaps an admittance to one of my many interior foibles), as I did not finish watching the movie. It's not as though the writing was horrible -- on the contrary, Wilder and Diamond were a fantastic team -- and performances are very funny. The reason for my divorce from this particular picture, however, must be filed under irreconcilable differences. I cannot stand being around characters or people who allow themselves to be pushed around, especially men by other men. It is one thing if a character is being bullied and does not know what to do, but if the character plays patsy to a domineering personality, I have very little sympathy for them and do not wish to be around them whatsoever.
As I was saying before: great script, sharp directing and Lemmon and MacLaine are second to none when they are exhibiting their powers of play. I just hate seeing people dehumanize themselves because another person says to roll over.
