Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Ricardo V — 06 Apr 2008
Remains the best period piece movie I have ever seen. I don't usually like period movies, they resemble jane austen novels, and I hate jane austen novels. but this one was different, the inner passions of the actors are on full display but in very very subtle ways.
the law and restriction of what you could say or do in those old-en days are on full display on this film and it makes a powerful film. a film that is overlooked in scorsese's filmography, which is a shame because years from now, this will be looked upon as one of his masterpieces.
daniel day-lewis plays a calmer character whose emotions are nevertheless rage inside of him, yet he can't show it. he can't show it to himself, to anyone else, or to his new wife, winona ryder.
the characters are perfectly cast in this film, michelle pfeiffer is the best thing about this movie, her beauty and grace could not be more vivid than this movie. winona ryder's performance does exactly what it needs to do as well.
this is a fantastic film about yearning for something you can never have. it's a classic.
