The held-back burning feelings, the appropriate behavior, the society, the manners, the passion, the intrigue, the gossip etc. In a word: the gilded age in NYC by Edith Wharton. The scary thing is that Michelle Pfeiffer looks exactly the same in this 1993 film as in Cherie of 2010!!! Good genes.
