For Fans Of: Seeing every Scorsese movie, Daniel Day-Lewis.

Art Factor: Medium.
Fun Factor: None.
Emotional Factor: Low.
Intelligence Required: Low.
Essential Viewing: No (Scorsese heads Yes).
The Plot: Love, lust, money and society all bring about a swirl of emotional turmoil in this period piece about the filthy rich.
My Take: My least favorite of all Scorsese features. Yes, I liked Boxcar Bertha WAY more. The 60 score is totally earned by Martin's camera work and Daniel Day-Lewis still being captivating in this boring piece. When I say boring, I mean there are stretches that are like watching paint dry. Ryder is terrible for this and in this. Michelle Pfeiffer isn't bad, but every scene she shares with Day-Lewis just shows how thin her range really is as an actress. I do not want to do to much bashing, but I do have to say that the run time on this is just terrible. It feels like a mini series by the time you are done. Ok, that was the last bash, back to some compliments. The set pieces are nothing short of amazing. Truly, this is some "inside of Titanic" quality stuff. The detail will blow set nerds away. FYI, I am a bit of a set nerd myself. I wish I had more to say, but I don't wanna just rehash the two points that I must get across: Day-Lewis and Scorsese are top shelf as always but the film that they are involved with just isn't the usual payoff. OH, and all of "Scorsese is the man guys and gals" better sit through it or you don't have the right to say it. You gotta see them all to earn that.
