Review of The Age of Adaline (2015) by Gerald F — 23 May 2015
The idea is similar in some ways to It's a Wonderful Life but this movie is pathetic in comparison. I like many genres of film and don't mind taking the girlfriend to see a a romantic movie - especially one with a plot that transcends the everyday world most of us live in - but this movie was just a disgusting and horrible failure! (Underline the previous sentence ten times).
The voice-over parts are necessary because the movie is poorly planned in terms of story-telling and comes across apologetic in my mind. The pseudo-scientific explanation for Adaline's immortality was so ridiculous, it makes the viewer wish they said it was just unexplained or even "magic"! I think the people involved were too lazy to make a decent film.
Many of the visuals were nice but the black and white and period re-enactments looked contrived. Few modern filmmakers have skill at re-creating the past. I cannot believe Hollywood spends so much money on making a movie but produces such crap! Yet you see this time and again.
What is wrong with film-makers today? YOU have all this money and training but you can't think things through enough to tell a good story? You could have done so much with the idea but you threw away a small fortune instead! I am sorry to have wasted my time watching your film and should have asked for my money back!
