The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert falls in line with many gay and men in drag movies that were released during the late 1990's and early 2000's, but stands out as one of the better ones.

The story concerns three drag queens, played by Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp, and Guy Pearce, all of whom take a cross-country trip through the outback in order to perform their stage show at their destination.

Along the way, they quarrel, they have fun, they meet interesting characters, and things are revealed about themselves to each other. The main film that this film probably draws the closest comparison to would be To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, but this is much more about the lives and feelings of its characters and not just overt comedy.

It also has some wonderful photography with gorgeous locations in Australia, as well as the colorful outfits and stage shows. There's a great visual variety and some terrific performances. The film is a little unbalanced narratively, which doesn't have a very ironed-out structure to it, but it's partly by design.

It's still a crowd pleasing movie with a cast of likable characters and beautiful locations.
