Review of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) by Ryan W — 27 Nov 2013
The standout 1990's Gay Camp Classic, that has reached much deserved cult status. With an Over the Top Soundtrack that enhances what is a sizzlingly witty script with depths of warmth and sensitivity, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a must standing head and shoulders above imitators.
A Tour d'Force of Australian Comedy and Film.Terence Stamp is a revelation as Bernadette delivering deadpan oneliners with crystal glass flair, Guy Pearce established himself as a serious actor with this spot on portrayl of young gay bratiness and brashness as Felicia, and who can believe that Hugo Weaving would go on to become one of cinema's greatest villians in the Matrix Trilogy, with such a nuanced and sensitive characterization of Mitzi.
To this day The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert remains an iconic cinematic expression of how gay liberation turned a corner in the 90's along with South Africa's emancipation. A Fine Romance indeed.
