Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Lowell N — 25 Mar 2009
The fantastic tales of Heronymus Karl Friedrich Baron Von Munchausen, who has always told "nothing but the absolute truth", are hereby chronicled in this enchanting, slightly off-the-wall film.
While a small town is under siege from the dreaded Turks, the H. Salt theatre company tries desperately to perform their rendition of the Adventures of Baron Munchausen. As if the impending siege were not enough, in comes the REAL Baron who sets about stopping the war, saving the town and setting the record straight with the help of his four gifted servants, his noble steed, Beaucephalus and his faithful dog, Argus.
An incredible piece of technocracy engineered and conceived as only Terry.
Gilliam could do it, with a sparkling performance by John Neville as the Baron, crazy Robin Williams, uncredited as the King of the Moon, and a most enchanting, wide-eyed Sarah Polley who tremendously supports Neville as little Sally Salt. SEE! Baron Munchausen fly to the MOON! SEE! The Baron and his friends fall through the World to the otherside!! SEE! The Great Baltic Monster Fish!!! SEE! the King and Queen of the Moon lose their heads over each other!!!! SEE! The Baron CHEAT DEATH!, time and time AGAIN!!!!! OOOOH! What will become of the Baron?! Surely, this time, there is NO ESCAPE!!!!!!
